Article: [senco-forum] Ch 4 Last Chance Kids

Dear Maggie
I just guess that everyone who watched it is on half term. Plus the same thread ran for weeks not so long ago under the subject line 'A definition of synthetic phonics'. See the October archives http://lists.becta.org.uk/pipermail/senco-forum/2007-October/subject.html

I did just look at the website to check what time it was on - last night I confess I watched the BBC 4 programme called 'The Age of Excess' about permissive London in the 18th cenury and the night before I saw a recording of Poirot.

I wa, initially, very surprised to by one thing on the website. The reading test given to see if the child has learned to read 'properly' (their words) is Burt revised 1974. There are some sensible pieces of advice at the end of the instructions about the different frequency of some words ( like Schonnel's 'canary') and a margin of error of six months either way. But my first thought was that this test will pick up every dyslexic as 'not being taught properly'. And then I realised two things. The first is that Burt is probably the only copyright free test Channel 4 could find. The second is that if parents pick up the fact that their child is dyslexic when the school hasn't realised because the child's coping strategies are working, then that is a good thing.

The TES forums are buzzing with comments about this series, but not a word on here. Is anybody watching it?

It was especially interesting tonight to see the Y6 girl with SEN who couldn't talk when she started at the school.
