Thankyou to all those who have offered suggestions for a dyslexia screen. There are a number allegedly free to download, many of these are in fact checklists rather than tests of phonic skills etc. Has anyone found anything useful among these.? I also find the results from LASS/COPS do not give a clear indication of the level of risk of Dyslexia, as I know other assessments do. This would be helpful to me in discussion with parents and staff. Does Lucid rapid do this? I find the critical tone of some of the replies to my posting unhelpful. I have been around the forum for years and am experienced SENCO, but others may be put off if they feel they may get a negative response. Constructive advice is what the forum is here for so please remember when posting, we can only know a little of someone's work situation, experience and stress levels - and phrase comments accordingly. I tried to make clear in my original posting that I was aware of the wider issues surrounding screening for dyslexia. I I called the posting "screen" rather than assessment or test for that reason. I also said that we had invested time and money in the detailed LASS /COPS assessment tools, which are regularly recommended on the forum. Time and money are only part of the reason why I am seeking an alternative, I also find the results from LASS/COPS do not give a clear indication of the level of risk of Dyslexia, as I know other assessments do. This would be helpful to me in discussion with parents and staff. I was extremely grateful to the forum for helping me through my early days as a SENCo, when , no doubt, I posted some fairly naive postings! Mostly I got constructive advice rather than being made to feel stupid or incompetent which at that stage would have finished me off, and isnt very pleasant even now! A screening tool is just that, it's not a full assessment for dyslexia. Screening a child is a first step action to determine whether a child should have a more in depth assessment. Screening a child could involve a variety of actions including just listening to the child read and analysing their errors or by analysing errors in their written work. Just because a screening tool is expensive doesn't mean its reliable. A cheap one is better than not having one at all. Cheers Sheridan No virus found in this outgoing message.
