Have you thought of any of Eddie Carron's materials? I know you say you have little or no money but from what I remember they are very reasonably priced ~ £180 ish. In a previous existence as primary SENCo I used the Electronic Library with a group of struggling year 6s and they loved it ~ willingly coming at lunchtimes to use it. It covers a wide range of topics / interests and I think I'm right in saying once you've bought the product you can copy as many CDs as you want so the kids can practise at home as well (don't take my word for it~ check that one out first!) Other products available as well. Worth visiting his site. Also google 'Eddie Carron' for some good reviews, print them off and try your Head again! www.carronpracticals.co.uk Hope this is helpful Jenny Cluley SENCo (Secondary) ----- Original Message ---- From: Audrey Smith <acsmith_99 at hotmail.com> To: "senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk" <senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk> Sent: Tuesday, 30 October, 2007 7:36:43 PM Subject: [senco-forum] KS3 pupils with very low reading ages Hi everyone, i would like to ask for advice, re a group of 8 year 7 pupils(2 girls, 6 boys), who despite our best endeavours in school ie regular extra reading support, Catchup scheme etc still have reading ages of below 7 years. My head does not/will not invest any extra money in to buying extra resources for them as he feels i should just accept that they are not worth bothering about. However i have managed to find 2 hours lsa support which i could direct towards this group per week. Does anyone have any suggestions of anything i could try with these pupils. As we are in a middle school i am very aware that when they transfer to upper school at the end of year 8 they will not be able to access the curriculum. The head of English gave me a copy of the reading Challenge stuff, but on reading it i do not feel it would be worthwhile following. So i am sure you wonderful people may have some suggestions. thanks in advance Audrey ----- Original Message ---- From: Audrey Smith <acsmith_99 at hotmail.com> To: "senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk" <senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk> Sent: Tuesday, 30 October, 2007 7:36:43 PM Subject: [senco-forum] KS3 pupils with very low reading ages Hi everyone, i would like to ask for advice, re a group of 8 year 7 pupils(2 girls, 6 boys), who despite our best endeavours in school ie regular extra reading support, Catchup scheme etc still have reading ages of below 7 years.
