Article: [senco-forum] KS3 pupils with very low reading ages

Hi Audrey

I assume the reading age is a comprehension age. What test did you use?

When the children read HOW do they read:

How many of the high frequency words can they read? without hesitation?
Do they use onset and rime?
Can they break words into phonemes and syllables?
Do they know the 44 phonemes and corresponding graphemes?
Can they use context cues to help them work out the meaning?
Can they retell the story in their own words?

10% of my year 7 intake (180) have a comprehension age below 7 years (NFER
Group)

Richard

Subject: [senco-forum] KS3 pupils with very low reading ages

Hi everyone,
i would like to ask for advice, re a group of 8 year 7 pupils(2 girls, 6
boys), who despite our best endeavours in school ie regular extra reading
support, Catchup scheme etc still have reading ages of below 7 years.
My head does not/will not invest any extra money in to buying extra
resources for them as he feels i should just accept that they are not worth
bothering about. However i have managed to find 2 hours lsa support which i
could direct towards this group per week.
Does anyone have any suggestions of anything i could try with these pupils.
As we are in a middle school i am very aware that when they transfer to
upper school at the end of year 8 they will not be able to access the
curriculum. The head of English gave me a copy of the reading Challenge
stuff, but on reading it i do not feel it would be worthwhile following.
So i am sure you wonderful people may have some suggestions.

thanks in advance

Audrey
