We'd probably go for the hour with all LSAs ( 28 currently) on the basis it doesn't hurt to remind existing LSAs of our expectations in secondary Whole point of job is to work your way out of job ie working for independence as far as is practical for child Therefore cover other pupils as well whilst ensuring named pupil isn't left floundering Using judgement as when to write for pupil and when pupil is to write for themselves ( ie achievable tasks for pupil) Ensuring that homeworks are written down Ensuring instructions understood Not talking to pupil through teacher talking to class (not chatting with other LSAs in the class!!) Learning when to take pupil out of class ( and developing rapport with teachers so this can be done smoothly) Going to registrations and assemblies with pupils (important not just for pupils but so that they know what is happening , when lunch times are changed, when trip money has to be given in , own clothes days etc ) When genuinely not needed in assigned class finding SEN admin for redeployment etc etc Stressing that each child is an individual that the LSAs are expected (on their peanut wages) to be professional and all things to all people. Where /who to go to if there are any problems - personal, conflicts with teachers or with pupil Presumably you will be giving out their support timetables -make sure new ones know times of lessons etc Have fun -I've got the perfect excuse -broken leg so can't go to school for 3 weeks and I won't even be thinking of you all Barbara ht -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of chris white Sent: 02 September 2007 19:05 To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [senco-forum] New Term School tomorrow. Can't wait! Anyway--- having looked at the agenda for the training day tomorrow I find I've got :An hour and a half in the morning with most of the TAs and an hour with the whole department in the afternoon. Out of this time I've allocated an hour for an initial induction for 3 new TAs. One is experienced in primary and so new to secondary. One is a Gap Year Student, (appointed by the Head I haven't met her yet!) and the third is a graduate with some experience with working with looked after children and children with emotional social difficulties. If anyone else was in my position how would they allocate this time, given that 2 of the three are ex pupils?
