Article: [SENco-forum] Re: How many rules?

"Very few mis-diagnosed as dyslexic? I cannot agree
with this I'm afraid.
The present consensus amongst the dyslexic community
(BDA & BDI) is that it
is a lifelong condition but then they have a vested
interest in this, it
brings them work, status and funding."
I totally agree.

"Dyslexia", or rather literacy problems in their
purest sense are caused by "Something". They cannot be
caused by "dyslexia".

That "Something" - to my mind and a lot of others- is
caused by PROCESSING deficits of some kind, either
auditory processing problems, visual processing
problems or sensory integration difficulties and
dyspraxia falls under these categories too, in motor
processing and it is the CAUSE that gives the child
the other difficulties that don't fall under the
category of literacy issues.

Those that perpetuate "dyslexia" as a cause of all
this do many people an injustice because once they
receive a diagnosis of dyslexia they rarely look any
further and fail to ascertain the cause, but what
causes the dyslexia may exist to cause added
difficulty in other aspects of their lives such as
speech and language skills, social skills, memory,
sequencing, etc. on into later life, adult education
and childhood. Some may not even have literacy
difficulties, the excellent readers diagnosed as
"dyslexic" (which makes a mockery of the name in my
view) are those that have been noticed as having
difficulties that cannot be covered any other way, but
will have in the most part been caused by processing
problems of some kind.

Also a mystery to me is how someone with terrible
difficulty in reading and/or spelling can be told they
are not dyslexic, when unable to efficiently access
literacy is what dyslexic should, in all common sense,
mean. And you also cannot be diagnosed dyslexic unless
you are a certain number of years behind your peers-
and this even varies from LA to LA! The "Go home and
don't worry, your child isn't dyslexic!" syndrome!
Basically "Your child is struggling but we can't tell
you why so pretend it isn't happening."

This makes a mockery of helping children with
processing - and literacy- issues.

As has been said recently, these children may not be
picked up till their coping strategies fail, and they
will, at some point, for everyone with processing
issues of any kind. And schools CAN spot it early if
they look, these difficulties can be present from
birth, although may be disguised in very capable
visual spatial learners, but these children will all
the while be grossly under-achieving.

Processing issues are a lifelong condition, either
with or without literacy difficulties.

Best wishes,
Aly
