Article: [senco-forum] Re: Sixth form SEN issues

Most significant to my mind is assessment for extra time as they start doing
public exams almost immediately ( we have very large 6th form many of whom
have not been with us through years 7-11 so early assessment is very
important . Include in assessment LADS pc based assessment)
Make sure subject teachers are aware of kids (circulate profiles where
appropriate) who may have processing difficulties = slow workers and we find
that they rush to tell us about others/
Encourage use of laptops can be assessed for use in exams if they become
proficient
Make it clear to 6th formers that they can just drop in if they’re
struggling and a time will be arranged to go through e.g. how to take notes
from a book, how to plan an essay etc
These are mainly well bright kids who may not have shown problems earlier in
school life as they had strategies that got them by - make it very clear its
because they’re bright that they've got so far and that what they need now
is a few more strategies!
Try and persuade staff to produce photocopied notes
Tell the kids about Disabled Student Grant which can get them goodies at
university ( as the term disabled is so off putting its as well to get them
over that hurdle as early as possible)

Ie apart from assessing early in sept and October not really very labour
intensive just the occasional input needed

I have just started a new job as senco in an 11-18 school(1600 students) but
have never worked with 6th forms before. Could anyone please outline what
you think are the key issues for SEN, bearing in mind that our staffing is
not very adequate for our year 7s to 11s.
Thank you in anticipation,
Linda
