It's not about a conspiracy theory - it's the way things work. You end up with decades of conflicting 'pure science' research in all areas of medicine. Great if you can survive that long. Thank goodness for the activists and the lay people who are prepared to put time in to extrapolate it all and translate it for the parents and kids who are suffering from society's ignorance on a day to day basis. What a relief for kids and adults to know they're 'normal' rather than 'difficult', to find acceptance for a special need rather than being seen as a pain in the bum. And hats off to those activists who are smart enough to find places where they can work on changing attitudes where it matters. :-) It's not just these APD guys - there's so much we don't know we don't know!! Take Dysgraphia : how many people understand how it manifests and what can be done about it? Or even know what it is! There is so much knowledge that doesn't get circulated because it's outside the mainstream. It takes time to work through the layers. Gladwell's The Tipping Point has much to say on this (but not specifically in relation to education and special needs) but Dyslexia is a good example - how many people dismissed it just a couple of decades ago and now some schools test as a matter of course, there are online training resources for teachers, accessible software, etc etc...
