For base mathematics we should perhaps return to real money  (£ s d) As an 
ex bus conductor (there's a real give away) I can tell you it helped with 
developing mental  artithmetic.  No electronic ticket machines then, just 
mental sweat.  A nice variety of coins to deal with (6 in all at decimal 
change over) all with different bases realtive to the pound.   Ah the good 
old days when there was $2.40 to the pound and an American cent was worth 
one British penny.  How I miss the threepenny bit, very good for the game of 
chip and toss (look out for the polis).
