But what is the best way to teach good handwriting?

I am in the process of looking at Y4 children for writing speed, use of
cursive, pressure/pen control and overall legibility. As a by product I
get
to see: ABC/abc knowledge, spelling of days/months, memory skills (rhyme
recall) and their grasp of spelling rules (word families and/or
irregular
words).

Having sorted sheep from lambs we run groups focussing on improving
motor
skills, learning relational sizing Aa Bb, cursive writing, and
incorporate
any missing elements such as days of the week etc., depending on what
is
needed. Have seen good gains measurable in letters per minute, wpm,
moving
from print to cursive, or joy when a child is pleased with their own
improvements. This is especially pleasing if they were initially
resistant
or lacking in confidence that anything would change.

I would like to get some norms for Primary writing speed. Does anyone
have
a y4 class of around 24 children that they would like to assess? I can
send some instructions and the whole process takes around 20 minutes to
complete.
