In a message dated 25/09/2007 19:18:49 GMT Daylight Time, jeanld at fish.co.uk writes: Not to mention when the energy starts to run out! I suppose you could also say that it all depends on how you view education: simply to provide vocational training, or to educate the whole person for the whole of their life. Do we just want to have the skills for the job we do, or do we want to be able to enjoy all the other things that make up human experience? It could be argued that today's youth is too reliant on tech, on access to instant information at the press of a few buttons. But today's youth also has the opportunity to learn from a much more vast range of sources than we pre techs ever did. The challenge for them, when the plug is finally pulled, is whether they have the collective resources and skills of collaboration to go back to whatever level they need to move forwards again. I think they will tho it will be a big wakeup call. Don't underestimate their resilience and adaptability. And, like Jamie, I think that handwriting will still be low down on the list of things to be done. As to how we view education - it is more or less redundant post 14 and probably a lot sooner than that - at least in its present form. If we recognise that, then youth just might be able to enjoy all the other things that make up human experience. Martin Living too close to Totnes, and used to be EP in Glastonbury |
