I suppose what would make these just ever-so-slightly-discriminatory statements OK, is the reason why the information is needed - if the information could help and support the children rather than be used as ammunition to undermine the middle class clever dicks who manage to get these statements winkled out of the system... There is one comment made here that I found worrying (yes, and I did find it offensive, too but I'm not shooting any messengers because I've heard it more than once...) The problem being that if one child has a statement then there's a comparison going on in teachers' minds as to whether it is 'fair' that they should have one - because there are other children (in the mind of the beholder) who 'deserve' it more because the beholder regards them as more 'needy'. So does this engender resentment and less support for these statemented kids if their teachers aren't really convinced they merit all this support? How ironic. This reminds me of that 'limited pot of money' which is always used as an excuse to give nothing to as many children as possible. Who does decide the deserving in the finish?? It's surprising where prejudice comes from and where it lands. It's something to think about! (Don't shoot *this* messenger. ;-)) |
