(Janice mentioned...) >>> dyslexic/dyspraxic pupils. <<< (A sad attendee at the BDA Harrogate Conference writes..... a mad one who ate lunch outside one day....wouldn't dream of doing that at home - x5 miles up the road - until around June...gotta' be conference fever! < VBG > ) Big, big changes ahead re "diagnosis" methinks for all the SpLDs. Neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience are gonna checkmate all else .....welcome to the coming world of medical diagnosis alongside PhD Psychologists using neuroscience qualifications but pulling the forelocks to the medics re genes and brain structures. & Teachers? - will teach. And what? - "Reading Instruction." Best teacher tests? Schonnell and TOWRE. I *do* enjoy listening to Amanda Kirby re Dyspraxia .... watch this space as DCD starts to become a major new urgency re available tests, schemes of work, etc. How are we gonna' support and not just remediate folk? Increasing emphasis methinks. "Feigning" Dyslexia ...... folk really do want to be "One of them" as it is so delicately said betimes. (Pax, pax, irate parents.... I *am* such a 'one'.) How to spot the wanna' be cheats? And our missing ones? Dyspraxia's certainly a-moving and a-thinking. & Researchers a-huntin'-of-the-dyslexics in a Girls' Grammar School of all places. Well really! Grammar Schools don't have Dyslexics or Dyspraxics or Aspergers, do they? Aspergers another new major urgency. And Language Disorder/Dyslexia..... I felt a sort of mood in the air that was: specialist help: yes; but no, not " a dyslexia". & Low IQ was identified.... then help as generously but do not feel sorry and call 'dyslexic' or 'dyspraxic'. "More Aware" and/or "Less Aware" were not terms used if I remember a previous thread aright re IQ/Dyslexia. We'll be talking support/awareness enabling mechanisms as much as about reading instruction efficiency as we get into high set dyslexics. ( And a 'rantic' (sic) parent comments ...."And about time too".... sorry, couldn't resist that one.) Synthetic Phonics? - Don't forget Morphemic Instruction too and Comprehension. Comprehension? Don't forget synthetic phonics too, and, Morphemic Instruction. ie Systematic Phonics + all the other things that go into making a real reader. (Martin was spot on re his comments on this of some time ago.) It was great to meet folk who went. (& the workshop leader who stopped in the corridor, turned, and smiled at the shambolic, sandal clad, beardie who stood aimlessly and said: "It's Mr Bergin, isn't it? Do you remember me?" Ahh, The joys of an old time class teacher trying to drag up memories of thirty years ago! < VBG> ) Interesting times lie ahead..... good luck to all of us who try to wield the magic wand. The medics are coming. The world's a'changin'. ( At which point I'll break into Bob Dylanese for real and conclude "He was always known to lend a helpin' hand.") John (retired) |
