Students with literacy difficulties -where the parents are not fighting to get support - are likely to have parents with literacy difficulties. If the school wrote offering help they may not have read or understood it. Some schools produce newsletters on tape/CD these days, or offer browse aloud on the websites. I have met parents whose response is "Well I was thick at school too so what can you expect" They were educated in a time of low expectations for themselves and so pass on the same low expectations to their children. When you are in a cycle of failure you do not want to learn more of the same - I failed yesterday so I will fail today - Finding different ways to engage a student means getting alongside them and getting to know what motivates them in order to use this to reengage them in learning - and who's got the time. Breaking any cycle is difficult as seen by the overburdened welfare system. Successful in our local primary has been: Small unit of 8 to re engage in learning Early morning clubs using ICT for spelling/reading Bacon roll & coffee with FLO to break down barriers & make people feel more comfortable in school - place of past terror for some. Dyslexia or support clubs for parent & child to attend together Basic literacy/numeracy clubs for parents only. Perhaps you could work with the local primary -when parents are more engaged - if offering support at Secondary is not working. It is in the secondary interest in the long run. We are in the position that we can offer some literacy support help to children we have identified as needing it. I am in a secondary school. I find it rather surprising and disappointing that some children with parental approval refuse to make use of what is offered. Have others experienced this and how do they deal with it?
