I'm not clear from the Consultation documents if you are going to be able to do this in the time. I think the documents say that NQTs cannot be SENCOs. Do you enough time to finish your course and do your initial year?

I have always said that I think that SENCOs should be teachers because I think that teachers respond better to advice on classroom management from those who know what it is like to manage a class - that's why EPs have to have spent time as classroom teachers.

I believe that there are three parts to a SENCO's role in a school. Diagnosis of specific problems with particular pupils - and knowing when to refer to outside agencies - and individual support for those pupils outside of the classroom if necessary. Advising and supporting mainstream teachers so pupils with SEN succeed in mainstream classes. Strategic planning so support workers are in the right places, teachers and support workers are trained and so on. It is the last role which is part of the SLT role.

It was in preparation for this move that I have been studying for a
Foundation degree in Learner Support for the last 2 years. I still have 3rd
year & PGCE to complete and never actually want to be a classroom teacher.

At least in theory I can do the final 2 years whilst being employed as a
SENco. Although not sure how being a mother of 4 with SpLD, a fulltime
student and a full time teacher will end up with me being able to give my
best to the students in my charge!

I am already a SpLD Dip & I do not wish to do other qualifications on top of
all of this - so - like you I will be interested to see what they will be
asking for. The only thing I have seen is the OU Grad Advanced Diploma for
SENco's.

In in order to be compliant it will cost me - not the government - around
£11,000.

Dear all

How do you feel about newly appointed SENCOs having to have a
qualification? I think it is essential but there is not information yet
about exactly it would be........
