I've done this with a Year 7 lad who was statemented for behavioural difficulties / needs but was at severe risk of permanent exclusion. However, this was several years ago, and I instinctively have the feeling that today it would be somehow be regarded as politically incorrect, or in some way abusive.... But at the time, the LA was happy to sanction the idea...so we shot lots of video of this young man in lessons. We had to allow for a period (when actually the camera was turned on but not recording) where both he and the other children got used to the idea, and didn't perform 'for' the camera. They did get used to it and we got both 'good' and 'bad' footage. When something had gone particularly pear-shaped, the LSA would withdraw the child to the Learning Support area almost immediately, in order to review and discuss the footage with the child. (All highlights, good and bad, were reviewed with him in timetabled sessions with his key LSA and me as SENCO.) We went down this route because we felt that he didn't understand how he looked to others - and early on in the piece he did observe, 'Christ I look a complete prat', unprompted, when reviewing his 'performance'. It wasn't a magic bullet, but it certainly helped; when things got difficult, he would be asked to think about how this would look 'on camera', long after we stopped using it. We also wanted to see whether the 'threat' of knowing that his parents might see the footage would help him to exercise greater control over his behaviour (it didn't). The young man in question managed to get to Year 11, where he foolishly, having asked to leave the lesson to go to the toilet, came back and told the teacher that he'd forgotten his lighter; his baccy tin, when investigated, didn't contain just tobacco - and he was permanently excluded.
