Article: [senco-forum] Mobile phones and cameras in school

Hi Janice and Gaynor
We do exactly what Gaynor's school does. We are having some success - I know because the two phones I confiscated on Friday (the first for ages incidently) were handed over with not arguments.
Posting films made in school on YouTube is rife. So are still pictures on Bebo etc. We deal with each indident when we need to. I think the major difference between the past and now is that pupils have the chance of publishing stuff to a wider audience.

Hi Janice

We take a really hard line on students using phones and the cameras that come with them.

Like you say they are banned but the students bring them anyway . Initially if any member of staff see or hear the phone it is confiscated and given to the student office where it is kept until the end of the day when the student can collect . If this happens again the parent is called and they have to come into school to collect the phone. This annoys parents as they have to take time to come in but they all signed the contract when student started school agreeing to the procedure so don't really have leg to stand on.

If any student is alleged to have used camera in school and /or posted on YouTube it is investigated ,punishment can be anything from internal exclusion or short term fixed exclusion dependent on the case.

One of the most amusing aspects of confronting students with the claim that they have been found out via YouTube is watching their faces as it dawns on them that teachers look at You Tube .

You also have to watch for phone to phone video sharing ,again this is dealt with as above .
