Thanks to all those who responded. I've had some great suggestions for how to use pics positively.
  I generally always go for the positive approach, which is probably why I felt instinctively uncomfortable with the idea.
  But I think what I am really asking is are there ever occasions when people have used a "negative" approach (photos or anything else) and been successful? or does it always reinforce students view of themselves as bad?
  The obvious example for me was on teacher training! We were all videoed teaching and watching the videos afterwards was not a positive experience at all! but it cured me of a few basic teaching faults almost overnight!

  I have seen an excellent behavior checklist today in a school. Photographs were taken of the child demonstrating the desired behaviours and then TA or Teacher ticked against every picture when they spotted it happening. It also prevents the 'I can't do that' reply. There were agreed targets and rewards each day with feedback to parents.
