I am testing as many areas of memory as I can other than just the auditory Short term memory using a format similar to the Digit Memory or Digit Span test so that the results can be compared. If children score highly in one area of memory it makes sense to use this to present them with new information while working on improving their weaker areas. This type of formative assessment can be used to find a baseline, to monitor progress, compare to norm (auditory only), identify strengths and weakness, inform for any support, feedback to pupil when metacognition is utilised to find out how they did something and then sometimes this leads to why one format is easier than the others. Changing one test from random objects to different sweet wrappers bought about more gains for one child who was otherwise difficult to engage, so there are other factors than pure memory at work.
