Article: [senco-forum] tablet laptop and access arrangements

Dear all,
I'm not sure if I've got the terminology right or not; I saw a pupil using what I think she said was a Tablet laptop which she had trained (as you do with voice activated software) to recognise her handwritimg. She wrote on the screen using a special pen and the laptop translated this into word processed writing. She got it in America but I imagine they are available in the UK.
I think this would be wonderful as an access arrangement for those pupils - often dyslexic- whose writing is difficult to read - spelling wise and illegibility wise. As it's very difficult to cope with an amanuensis and it's a difficult skill to use voice activated software well. Also there is much in the kinaesthetic act of writing that helps the pupil get ideas onto paper.
I have a number of students in mind but at the moment I'm thinking in particular of my son; the EP report recommends extra time and either an amanuensis or use of voice activated software but I'm not sure for him if either will fully help him - word processing is not really an option as he is so slow despite following a number of 'touch typing ' programsand I don't think it will help his spelling which at 14yrs is measured at 8:6 yrs - very dyslexic with a semantic language difficulty as well as auditory processing difficulty and poor phonological awareness.
Does anybody have any information on this sort of laptop?
Does anyone have any experience of asking for this as an access arrangement or is there anyone out there with influence to push this with the JCQ or whoever?
  thanks in advance,
  janet
