A forumer wrote asking for suggestions for ideas on good teaching practice for ELL. Here are some ideas. They may be of use to others... and others may wish to add to the list... Philippa Teaching Talking from nfer-nelson is very effective at EAL support - see book by Jean Gross and Angela White. http://shop.nfer-nelson.co.uk/icat/teachingtalkingsecondedit the book url is long - copy and paste for it to work in your browser address line. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Special-Educational-Needs-School-Improvement/dp/1843120119/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203473083&sr=1-2 Cambridge university press have some good publications according to a fellow practitioner out here in Dubai. Clicker has some eal software http://www.cricksoft.com/uk/products/clicker/newtoenglish know that it takes 5 years to become native in a language through immersion so don't expect miracles straight away. use lots of visuals. pre-teach vocab for mainstream topics. eal learners need to be taught in class not out of it - all gleaned from an ell course we just attended. Also googled for practical guidelines on teaching english language learners and came up with: http://www.centeroninstruction.org/resources.cfm?category=ell&grade_start+grade_n=12&subcategory=research http://www.cambridge.org/elt/elt_projectpage.asp?id=2500782 - has several books on that page. |
