And what do you do when the student resolutely refuses to do what the LA have instructed and write everything in Polish first before attempting the English or sit while the teacher writes it underneath as if he were in Y1? This student did not want to continue with his first language nor could we support or correct his usage or spelling even if he did and he was the only non English speaker in the school. A Bi-linguilism policy set after working in areas with predominately Bangladeshi families eager to support the school to integrate language learning both ways, share culture etc., are fine for schools in that setting, but trying to implement all the recommendations for 1 child in 1 language, especially when it went against what he wanted is very difficult. The parents didn't speak English and were unwilling/unable to come in to help. Few resources were available other than those I went out of my way to find (like the SENco with the Polish translations). Its great if 2 parents speak 2 languages and a child gets all the support they need in both languages, but much harder to replicate in school. We can't even get English speaking children to master their own language or learn a 2nd language effectively. If we could understand how do to do these two things then integrating anyone wanting to use/learn their own 1st language in school alongside acquiring English would be easier!
