Which reminds me of something I once heard on a radio programme, from someone who was at a dinner in honour of an elderly, extremely clever and much loved mathematics professor at an Oxbridge college. Said professor proposed a toast: "Here's to the higher mathematics; long may they continue to be of absolutely no use to anyone at all!" I have long felt that there is far too much emphasis on utilitarianism. Once we abandon learning for learning's sake, we start to stifle creativity, which is part of the joy and messiness of being human, rather than being a robot! Regards Jean Who now has time to just "stand and stare" and is thoroughly enjoying it! Thankfully, UK universities are places where research, opinion and even > the odd crackpot idea can flourish unfettered by censsorship and other > forms of excessive centralised control. > > Long may this continue! > > Best wishes > > ________________________________ > > From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk on behalf of SEN Marketing > Sent: Thu 2/28/2008 9:55 PM > To: 'Becta Senco' > Subject: Re: [senco-forum] Durham daydreamers > > > >>From the same University that wants us to see the `death of dyslexia' >> comes > research that 1:10 pupils has a "working memory deficit". > > http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7267352.stm > > Does make me wonder how they are interpreting what they are seeing!! > > Colin > > SEN M > > > > > > > > > > ______________________________________________ > This email has been scanned by Netintelligence > http://www.netintelligence.com/email > |
