And a Happy New Year to you all - and if you work in Bedfordshire you will be back at work on Thursday - and they wanted to have a training day on Wednesday too! (Was taken on the Friday before Christmas though - that was thought to be the lesser of the two evils). And thoughts for you all for the New Year - TEN WAYS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS * Ignore the problem completely. It does not exist and consequently there is no need to consider it at all. * Forget the problem. Take an aspirin or a drink and relax. * Study or define the problem. This creates a real diversion and usually ends the search for a solution. * Find a scapegoat and ride him. This is particularly useful if the scapegoat has only just left the organisation. * Profess not to have the best answer; this lets you out of having any answer. * Urge a 'go slow' concept. This avoids the need to consider the problem at this time. * For every proposed solution, set up an opposite solution and conclude that the middle ground, no change, represents the best course. * Show that any solution is only a futile quest for certainty and that in fact it is doubt and controversy that promote growth. * Act embarrassed when the problem is first brought up and hint that it is in bad taste to discuss the problem and that any consideration of the problem would be misinterpreted by outsiders * In a tight spot, say something that no one understands and which is totally irrelevant. And when I first found this - I filed it away as humour. However, I have worked with a number of people who must have had this presented to them during their management training. You may well have met them too! Regards Ruth |
