For my children I used to start with - what costumes can I easily make and then look for a book character to match. My favourite was turning a black velvet dress (from a charity shop) into a spider. You wear the dress (don't panic men) and your arms become set of legs No.1 Some black trousers are pair No 4. Cut off the bottom of the dress & make into long rectangles. Sew and stuff to form the other legs (4 in total?) Insert into the dress side seams on each side above & below waist height & sew in place. If you then attach thin black elastic or thick cotton from your arms and down onto each successive fake pair of legs the fake legs will move every time you move your arms - great for getting people's attention. When your arms are down you cannot see the other legs easily. I sewed huge ping pong ball sized eyes onto a black cap (beret, baseball etc)to complete the ensemble. You can be whomever you choose depending on the age of your children - Incy Wincey, Anansie, or Aragog from Harry Potter. I'm sure there must be others. Nice and harmless for Halloween as well.
