Article: [senco-forum] Maths in secondary

A number of our 'top end' literacy 'strugglers' (i.e L3b-3a at KS2) come with L5s for Maths & Science. I have one Y8 who can barely read who is 'top set' Maths and who is capable of 'top set' Science, but can't cope with the reading & writing involved.

It all depends really on why they are having literacy difficulties, whether they have a global difficulty or they just haven't been taught reading & writing particularly effectively.

Very few come to us at below Teacher Assessed L2 for Maths, though having spent a number of years in the 'special arrangements' room for Maths SATs and seen children struggle with very basic concepts I wonder if the L2s are sometimes wishful thinking...

Children working at L3 or below end up in a 'bottom set' with TA support if possible.

I wonder, what is the lowest level in maths that a child entering your secondary school has been working at. Do the children that are struggling with reading/literacy have similar problems in maths. In secondary schools if a child is working at L3 or below are they taken out in small groups or are there enough pupils at that level to cater for their needs in a class. Is any support/teaching provided by a teacher or is all support through a TA.
