Building Resilience Workshops

1 Coping with Change and Understanding Stress’ Sandy Geddes
Interest in stress management and relaxation techniques led Sandy’s career from nursing to training in psychotherapy specialising in working with adults and children both in group work and individual therapy.
Her aim is to provide workshops for staff involved in nurture groups and those interested in Nurture provision to gain more understanding and knowledge about stress in young people and how suitable techniques can be integrated safely to the nurture practice.

2 ‘Getting Connected’ Andrew Marsay
Andrew is the Development Officer with Getting Connected. His workshop will help gain an understanding of the nature of the curriculum framework and how it can be used with young people.
Getting Connected comprises nine units, which can be accredited by OCR. The success of the Programme hinges on effective relationships being developed between young adults and practitioners working with them

3 Minimising the Impact of Speech and Language Difficulties on Children’s Behaviour and Learning Dr Ruth Paradice
Dr Ruth Paradice has always had an interest in how children develop language. This workshop will reflect on the nature of speech and language difficulties and the impact this will have on children’s behaviour and learning. It will then go on to consider a range of strategies that can be used to facilitate children’s learning. The workshop is most relevant for people working in the 3 – 11 age range, those working with older children and teenagers might also find it gives them insight into their pupils’ difficulties.

4 PAThS Joanne Davies, Dean Emson, Hannah Evans, Lyndsey Howells, Caroline Palmer, Peter Ford
Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies is a home – school – community programme that encourages self-expression and emotional literacy, reinforces social and behavioural skills and promotes family involvement in the children’s development.

5 Play and Non-verbal Techniques Lindsay Steel
Counselling Skills in Educational Settings Play and Non-verbal Techniques introduces ways of working with young children to enable them to understand and express their emotions within the safe and natural arena of play. This is based on Attachment Theory and dovetails with the nurture group philosophy.

6 Counselling Skills in Educational Settings examines how the techniques of counselling can be synthesised with existing skills and used to develop Emotional Intelligence with youngsters who are more able to express themselves verbally.

7 Power of Puppets Gill Davey
The "Power of Puppets" workshop will give participants an opportunity to explore the use of puppets as a teaching resource and as an aid to promoting emotional well being. Ideas will be given for working with groups of pupils at primary and secondary level. The workshop will include suggestions on addressing common and universal themes such as bullying or dishonesty, as well as story telling and setting up scenarios to explore more specific situations.

8 Running A Key Stage 3 Nurture Group
Martin Haskayne As the popularity of Nurture Groups within Secondary education grows, this
workshop aims to inform attendees about the development of groups for older pupils, including; timetable considerations, staffing, curriculum and the application of Nurturing principles to adolescents. This workshop will be useful for senior managers; school special needs staff and practitioners alike.

3. Announcement - Ask the Experts on Special schools of the future

The Inclusion site has launched a new theme for Ask the Experts, on Special schools of the future.

Major funding is rebuilding or refurbishing every secondary school, and half of primary schools, in England over the next 15 years, including special schools. All schools will use ICT to enable access to a wider curriculum and extended opportunities – but do we have a vision for special schools of the future?

Three experts are lined up to give their views: John Galloway (Advisory Teacher for ICT/SEN and Inclusion, Tower Hamlets), Bernard Gummett (Headteacher of George Hastwell School, Cumbria) and Sally Paveley (ICT/SEN Consultant at The Advisory Unit).

You can ask them about the vision and practice they would like to see in the special schools of the future on Inclusion [http://inclusion.ngfl.gov.uk/index.php?i=202)
