Depends how early in the 70s, I suppose. Mine was 1969 - 1970, which is as early as it gets! I had a year unqualified teaching between school and uni - not called "gap" years then - A level results had not quite got me to where I should have been going, so I taught in a junior school while I reapplied to different unis for one subject instead of joint honours. The school had two classes for what were then called Educationally Subnormal Children, which set me on the track that my career took: teaching children with special needs. The gap, degree, then PGCE meant that I was nearly 24 when I started teaching; thus I reached 60 last January and retired in the summer. Much as I enjoyed my work, I am enjoying retirement even more; it is simply the thought that I can do whatever I want to do , when I want to do it. A bit like the start of my teaching career, when a day's planned work would be pushed aside because it had snowed, or there was a very heavy frost, either of which could provide exciting and stimulating activities - written and practical - that might not be there the next day. I recall one day, only about 10 years ago, when I got a Y5/6 class to turn tables and chairs to face the windows that looked out onto the school field, covered in frost, with the sun shining through a mist and we used pastels to draw the scene. Everyone enjoyed it, no-one moaned that they couldn't draw; we all enjoyed learning how not to get messy with pastels and we produces a lot of creative prose/poetry writing afterwards as well as maths/science activities. We have gained a lot from NC, but I can't help feeling that we have lost far too much! Nostalgia time over!
