Solity found that the first100 words and the synthetic phonics approach was sufficient to create independent readers. Beve Hornsby stated in one of her publications (Alpha to Omega?) that 250 words make up 25% of all texts, even at adult level. It therefore makes sense that children can cope with these with accuracy and speed in reading and spelling so that a large part of their reading and writing is well within comfort zones. If phonics are taught then the phonically regular HFWs take care of themselves. The rest need to be taught. Michael Thomson of East Court School found that Simultaneous Oral Spelling worked well. Davies found that making words in "clay" and modelling the concept too was successful. Philippa |
