[senco-forum] Numicon

We have been lucky enough to welcome Romey Tacon of Numicon into school to
deliver some training.  Romey is a former Senco and was also a Headteacher.
Her understanding and knowledge of how children learn maths, garnered from
research and practice, is outstanding.  The Numicon site is well worth a
visit to read the research.  One interesting figure in the research summary
on the site is that 50% of Y2 children gained a Level 3 in their SATs
following the use of Numicon as their structured maths teaching.  This
facility with maths concepts was retained into KS2 despite Numicon not being
used in KS2.  KS2 maths concepts are rooted in the KS1 materials.

I think that if wave 1 teaching was this effective then our jobs would be so
much more manageable - dealing with the real learning needs.

The training DVD is also excellent.
