Article: [senco-forum] Harrogate - BDA conference

£313 for an 'Early Booking discount' is a huge amount of commitment!

We are all struggling to make ends meet! This amount of money is well over half of the entire amount I have to spend on resources for pupils with SEN for a whole year.

The price of the conference certainly implies some commitment, particularly for those who do not have a large institution to stump up for them. The programme has loads in it and lots of difficult choices. We will be exhibiting as well as attending, but I don't know who else yet. The BDA is still struggling to make ends meet and so very short staffed. It may help to think of attendance as being a helpful altruistic donation as well as a personal benefit!

Thanks for the programme, Martin, but for me it's the list of fellow
exhibitors that is missing. (I have e-mailed the BDA to ask for a list.)
Yes, you want to know who you can hear, but I would hope you also want to
know who is offering what products? But at present you won't find that out
until you get there. It's very pricey too for Exhibitors. The problem is
the venue that BDA has chosen, Harrogate ICC is not cheap. In previous
years, it's been at Universities in York and Warwick which have come out
cheaper for the delegates and exhibitors.

But then the parts of the Education Sector are getting silly in the prices
charged too. I have been sent mailings from Optimus; Specialist Schools and
Academies Trust; and National Association of Headteachers in the past 6
months, that are charging ridiculous amounts for a one or two day
Conference. It might be affordable by the four big Publishing
conglomerates, but small family run companies are ruled out immediately.
Likewise the Independent Schools Council believes Exhibitors have very deep
pockets for their events.

The more each organisation charges the more expensive each Publication
becomes. Take Dyscalculia Guidance published by NFER Nelson, it started at
£25.00 NFER now charges £44.00 for the same book.

The market place is a little crazy at present...

I am sure there will be more... but information is scarce.

There is load of info about the conference here:

would be difficult to choose which seminars to go to, but fees and
accommodation would cost about £650, then there's the travel and eating
(forget the annual dinner or whatever they call it at 55 quid). I think I
could do the whole thing for about £900. C'mon BDA, stop taking the micky.
