Not for their health but probably to raise the BDA profile in order to have influence in government, but mostly to raise money via corporate fees and donations. It used to be about parents pushing for help and information, or the swapping research info to speed up discoveries, but this can be done so much more easily via internet now without having to be face to face. How about live link on the internet to each seminar so that those who cannot afford to go can still access the latest info? Probably wouldn't make enough money unless we paid to enter each session. Come on BECTA this is supposed to be the ICT driven bit of education. Could you volunteer to record/transmit sessions? We should be on web cam, ipod downloads not waiting for a possible research paper overview on the BDA site or a distant DvD. Instead of a conference about dyslexia and dyslexics, why not a conference for dyslexics? You needn't actually book anywhere, just send the delegates directions to Leicester, they'll assume its Leeds. They'll be so embarrassed they'd never consider claiming a refund. Alternatively, how about a conference for dyscalculia suufferers? (Dyscalcalcoolics?) Then you would have to hold the conference, but you could charge what you like, how would they know? The killer scam would be to hold a joint conference. You couldn't count (the dyscalcoolics certainly couldn't) the number of ways to make money out of that. What, you think people who organise conferences do it for their health?
