Article: [senco-forum] Year 10 boy

Hello Gill

I would say that you should start with this:

Needs extra time (up to 25%) in exams - you would need to get the school to do the test and apply.
Might qualify for a reader (Standardised score below 85 on a single word reading test) and / or a scribe (very slow writing speed and / or spelling below 85 in a test).

For finding out what his preferred learning style is, we have had a lot of success with our Year 11 Revision Club using the VARK website http://www.vark-learn.com/english/page.asp?p=questionnaire which gives you study skills in a format which is your preferred style (only go for one answer) and a Multiple Intelligences test http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ict/multiple_int/questions/choose_lang.cfm which tells you more information.
I have found that my daughter (Year 11 student this year) has almost zero interest in visual material but a high auditiory and musical side. No wonder she finds some subjects so difficult.
Use the VARK suggestions on how to SWOT (Study WithOut Tears) first then look for more on the lines which work.

I have assessed the son of a friend for literacy problems as she wants some updated numbers for the school. At 14.6.yrs he is older than my usual pupils.
he achieved NV IQ 87
Expr lang 11.6.yrs
ASM 72 IQ (4 forward, 2 back)
VSM 6 itens good
AD good though he could not recall the 2 words long enough to decide on 5 pairs
VD good but he took a very long time to decide.
Reading on 2 untimed tests 10.0 yrs
on 2 timed teats DI speed read 8.10 yrs and Kirklees 8.6.yrs.
Spelling regular test 10.0 yrs
Irregular test 7.2.years. Most errors were vowels and no spelling rules.

I think the boy's SpLD problems are very slow auditory processing and limited working memory capacity. He is stressed about homework and revision and exams etc,
Working under time pressure is obviously torture for him. I think it is too late to start a detailed DI type read.spell package for him and would think that study skills revision techniques, exam survival strategy given in school by a study mentor would be a better bet. Would this boy qualify for extra time support etc? What would you KS3/4 SENCO's do to best support in his last 18 months of school?
I am doing this as a favour and want to give the best possible advice to Mum. Please can you help me?
