in the garden!

I don't think that EVERY child has the capacity to learn to read easily and
certainly not to spell regardless of the teaching style involved.

It would also be wonderful if we could all spot exactly what the barrier to a
child's learning might be.

The word I don't like is easily. I still think that in this country we start
formal academic education too early to the detriment of socialising, oral
development, learning to listen, to share, to be a group etc. and that we
should investigate more fully continental early learning styles and
incorporate much of what they do into our initial stages of education.

How about physical handicap? For example I have yet to meet a blind child
who learned to read "easily".

Our irregular spelling patterns do not help children spell easily - the best
writing I have ever seen was in Bolton in the early 60's watching children
who had been brought up on "ita" writing to my dictation, where every word
was correctly spelt - with a lot of ough words.

I would probably spend my essay decimating a sweeping generalisation like
your essay title!

Best of luck
