own staffroom had given me when I taught maths. Everything from
serious debate to lighthearted conversations.
It took a few months to build up steam but today it has 400
members from over 90% of HEIs. Two issues crop up from time to
time. One is that the list should be broken down into several
specialist ones: this invariably leads to howls of protest and wont
happen. The second is that there is simply too much mail. I see
that as a measure of success not cause for complaint.
Nevertheless, I know we have lost quite a few members because of
this. Sad but inevitable. Perhaps their parting complaints have lead
remaining members to reduce their frivolity, and dis-forum does get
very serious most of the time. If so, it's sad. (We could never have
had the liberty bodice saga for a start!)
Incidentally, dis-forum had another consequence. The mail showed
how undervalued undepaid and overworked the members were that
a few of us decided to set up a professional association for them. It
came into being at a conference last March and we call it NADO,
the National Association of Disability Officers. Humberside
University is its admin centre and I'm its chair until proper elections
can be called.
