Hello All,

Abbreviations abound in what we do and sometimes I am asked one ( or more ) I don’t know. I made this list of those I think I know. If it’s wrong I would welcome corrections but what I would really like is any more that anyone else knows relevent to what we do.

Or is there already a list somewhere ?

Not a good time to ask perhaps. Maybe I’ll post this again in September, updated if anyone replies.

AAC =  Augmentative Alternative Communication
AD/HD =  Attention Deficit / Hyperactive Disorder. See also ASD. ADD.
ADD =  Attention Deficit Disorder. See also ASD, AD/HD
Alexia =  Gives the same symptoms as Dyslexia but is usually the result of brain damage.
AMBDA =  Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association

COP =  Code of Practice
DAMP. =  Deficit in Attention and Motor Planning
DCD =  Developmental Co-ordination Difficulty
DDP =  Departmental Development Plan
DfEE =  Department for Education and Employment
DI =  Dyslexia Institute
Discalcula =  A disorder involving difficulty in maths.
Dyslexia =  A disorder involving difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters and other symbols.
Dysphasia =  A language disorder marked by deficiency in the generation of speech due to brain disease or damage.
Dyspraxia =  A developmental disorder of the brain in childhood causing difficulties in activities requiring co-ordination and movement. Known also as ‘clumsy child syndrome’.
