Stuart,
In our Welsh medium designated Primary school, we screen pupils in Year
3, through medium of English. In KS1, ALL PUPILS ARE ONLY TAUGHT through
Welsh, therefore, using an English language test could (and probably
will) give the incorrect results. Pupils may be 'labelled as mld' and
not SpLD.
We use LASS Junior for screening, as well as Prawf Sgrinio Prosiect
Dyslecsia Cymru/ Screening Test produced by Welsh Dyslexia
Project--normed and standardized on pupils in Wales. There are both
welsh and English screening tests included, .THEY ARE NOT TRANSLATIONS
OF EACH OTHER, but using data on Word usage provided from a Bangor
University Database.
We assess Welsh Reading and Spelling using Prawf Darllen Glannau Menai
(which is of a similar structure to Neales Analysis). Gives Reading Age,
Standardized Scores.

Our LEA SpLD Service, uses NFER Single word Spelling Test, and Neales
Analysis alongside BPVS and CATs Scores (if available).
Screening/Assessment by SpLD Service is done by the Service Manager, who
visits schools aas and when required.

Gwynedd Council and Isle of Anglesey have developed (2006) their own
Screening Test, using the new Working Definition of Dyslexia (BPS 1999)
as its basis. It asesses Reading and Spelling--at Word Level, over a
period of time. Again both a Welsh and English version is available. I
don't know if it is freely available across all LEA's in Wales.
The aim of this is to help teachers to provide appropriate
teaching/learning opportunities through the production of an IEP witrh
targets based on phonetic structure.

Perhaps other teaching colleagues in Wales will be able to contribute to
the response from Wales through the Forum.

A member of the Cross party group at the Scottish Parliament is
currently looking at a petition for assessing for dyslexia by age 7 -

Turned into a lively debate!

Collegues - questions:

1.	What do you think is an appropriate age to assess for dyslexia ?
2.	What tests are used to assess primary pupils for dyslexia and at
what age? - is it successful?

Will try and collate responses - both from the Forum and from our CPG
petition!

What is happening in Wales around this topic?

Tks all

Stuart
