I have no problem with phonics as all good parents teach this to the very young - the logographic stage where M=McDonalds. I just don't see the necessity to stick with keeping separate the analytical bit that makes for good games. I do like that synthetic phonics is able to change and adapt to include blends, which one system I looked at did not in the beginning. I am happy that better teaching of teachers leads to the elimination of the 'schwa' sound and overall having a recognised system makes many teachers more confident in their abilities to teach sound/symbols and later reading/spelling. If I had to come down in the phonic or real book camp it would be phonics, but both has a place as do synthetic & analytical phonics.
