I'm sure that Stanovich would be delighted to hear that he is only a 'theorist'!  Thirty years of research into reading dismissed in one word....

  There is no agreed working Model anywhere, there are some models proposed by some researchers, but there is not an agreed working model, that defines the individual skills required to perform the task of reading, how the precise methods that from birth a child used to develop these skills, and how these skills inter relate when performing the task of reading. There are many well know theorists who have to make assumptions to fill in their precise knowledge gaps, such as Stanovich, but we do not have the technology yet to provide a complete working model.
