MRI scans have made great leaps in seeing what happens in brains. However as ever the research is mired by multiple variables. For instance I found a great paper showing that Auditory and Phonological training brings about brain changes and improvements in reading. Great! Then I read on to find that the subjects used these ICT exercises for nearly 2 hours per day, 5 days a week for 30 days = 60 hours. EP Martin from Dyslexia Action's "Spellit" report found that 2 hours per week for a school year (?)with a dyslexia tutor also made huge reading/spelling gains. Has anyone evaluated ICT versus SpLD tutor results? No. Nor one ICT training programme against another that I can find as yet. Research often has lots of areas of interest, but this takes too long to filter down into easily applied and concrete support. This ICT programme has the potential to be cheaper, but is less flexible. Children on the course made <O to <5 points reading improvement. So -it worked for some but not others! They showed that there were changes to brain areas linked to mapping of phonological processing that gave improved oral language skills leading the researchers to regard any improvements in reading, the point of the ICT programme, as a secondary effect for some with dyslexia.
