Sharon - you could be describing my highly dyslexic daughter's relationship with Maths - she left school with a Maths E at GCSE but has since overcome this problem entirely to nowlod down a highly responsible job which many would regard as requiring a deep insight into mathematics. I would hazard a guess that 'Estimating', like reading' is not a discrete, standalone skill, but the product of a number of sub-skills such as visualisation etc. there will be those with specialised knowledge of the Maths sub-skills who may be able to specify these. It is the exercise and subsequent reflex assimilation of poorly functioning sub-skills that is the key to all complex skills assimilation. Recognising the ability to 'estimate' as a key component of success in Maths but having no appreciation of the sub-skills involved, many years ago, in a probably naïve attempt to confront this issue, I worked on a programme to exercise this particular issue but I never got around to testing it in practice.
