Surprisingly , the Edam ban comes up alot! The girls see it as a sort of a landmark victory. It's purely symbolic but it reassures them that they can influence the home rules.  It's healthy for the kids to know you will yield to some of the rules they lay down. Lord knows we lay down plenty ourselves! 

Overall, I don't see it as much of a punishment, my wife is French so we have plenty of choice in the fridge!

Unless someone died eating as a result if the low quality cheese that that you substituted for mozzarella  I think a 5 year ban on Edam eating is too harsh. I would bring it up at the next family meal time.  I suspect everyone else has forgotten and you are voluntarily punishing yourself for no good reason.
