Reading is the retrieval and assimilation of the intellectual content of text. Sharon Each individual's consciousness of the 'voice in their head various enormously between total unawareness and complete awareness. Just as there is a maximum speed at which text can be vocalised, there is also a maximum speed at which it can be sub-vocalised. In speed reading, when the reading rate reaches maximum, the assimilation of meaning becomes a consequence of only 'reading' some, not all of the words - ie skimming.
