Article: [senco-forum] end of term funnies

Dear All,
            Some letters from The Times:
have a lovely Easter - when it finally comes,
  janet

  Words
The Times, Wednesday 20th February 2008.
  Sir,
It is always a pleasure when visiting the US to discover which words have sneaked into the English language. After hearing that temperatures would “declimb” in early afternoon and we were likely to get some “frozen precip”, the biscuit was taken by our Harlem tour guide who informed us that the church we were passing was where Adam C. Powell and other leading lights were all “funeralised”.
  David Thompson
Harmer Green, Herts

The Times, Thursday 21st February 2008.
  Sir,
David Thompson need not go to the expense of visiting America to find pleasure in words which have “sneaked into the English language” (letter, Feb 20).
In my local DIY superstore there is a sign which declares that some goods have been “deranged”.
  Peter Sergeant
Loughborough, Leics

The Times, Saturday 23rd February 2008.
  Sir,
I wobble under the US ability to proceed from noun to infinitive and back to an invented noun (letters, Feb 20 and 21). On a flight to Boston I was told a beverage would be served, then a hopeful “we intend to beverage”, and finally, because of adverse weather conditions, “we are unable to complete beverisation”.
  Anne McCall
Salisbury

  Sir,
While waiting patiently for the lift at the Royalton Hotel in New York, an American businessman turned to me and uttered the memorable observation: “This hotel is underelevatorised”.
  Alan Parnaby
London
  P.T.O.

The Times, Tuesday 11th March 2008.
  Sir,
It’s not only the anglophones who can have fun with language. I was intrigued the other day to note on the back of a DVD I was looking at in a French market that the star had been oscarisée for her performance.
  Jonathan Dalrymple-Smith
La Ciotat, France

  The Times March 13, 2008
  Sir,
Perhaps even more descriptive than Mr Dalrymple-Smith’s actress who had been oscarisée (letter March 11) was a criminal near Perpignan, whose getaway car was reported in the local press as having vroomé.
  Ken Broad
Newport, Shropshire
