We have had three pupils this week - all Year 11 - with big problems. Too were already seeing professionals at our CFCS (Child and Family Consulatation Service) which is able to refer to psychiatrists, psychologists, paediatricians, speech and language etc and I was phoned by a practioner about these two, who were described a a high risk of suicide, so we could work together on strategies. The third was from a parent who knew through a third party that her son was talking suicide on the web and to friends but as she had not spoken to him about it I suggested she did that urgently then gave her the number of YoungMinds parental helpline and the local A &E who I know have psychiatrists on call. I did wonde whether there was something else I should have done. This was discussed today at the ATL conference. There has been a number of cases recently in Wales. The article in the 'times' talks about anxiety, pressure to do well in exams, family problems etc. I wonder if anyone has come across a slightly different scenario, where these suicidal tendencies affect mainly teenage girls. It is always linked to an exacerbated 'mysticism', a morbid interest in what passes nowadays as ' paganism' and a 'goth' lifestyle. I don't know if I am actually making sense, it has been a long day... Anyway, has anyone got any thoughts on this rather unpleasant, worrying subject? how do you deal it with this sort of teenage problems? counselling, CAMHS, what else is there? ...... Have a good Easter break.
