For the record I was on the Dark Side.
In the early nineties, I worked in the food industry as a manager and consultant. I was appalled at the pay and working conditions that functionally illiterate adults had to put up with.
As a direct result of low literacy levels accidents were common place.
In 1995, I was a lay consultant on a design team briefed to create a new harvesting machine. I asked for a set of indepandant controls to be fitted to some lifting gear on the machine. My argument was that the educational and or language ability of the operators was too low to safely operate the machinery with a single control. These reccomendations were ignored.
As a result a man I knew (but who didn't work for me) died.
In the summer of 1996 I left my company to become a teacher.
On the bad days when the kids really don't give a hoot, I remind myself of why I am there.
