Balance has to be retained between practical experience and paper qualifications. When I needed a dyslexia tutor for my daughter I had to pick one with a qualification that indicated both theoretical and practically applied experience with dyslexia. So we chose 'AMBDA approved' as any qualification the BDA validate has to include the above 2 elements plus QTS with 2 years of classroom teaching. I would have foregone the last bit of the qualification but that was the LEA's only requirement! I am currently on a FD in Learner Support- followed by a year at Greenwich 1 day per week to finish off a degree in Childhood Education studies. Then most go onto to a PGCE. The course, for the most part, is is converting TA's (predominately in special schools) into teachers to fill jobs working alongside learners at the severe end of the SEN spectrum. Jobs which they cannot get teacher to fill currently. Similar problem at either ends of the spectrum. There needs to be a place for classroom assistants and teaching assistants according to a person's skills and desires with the HLTA grade for a step up to management or assisting SENco's.
