Aaron. Your story about the illiterates in the food industry reminded me of a similar story. In 1939, virtually every able-bodied man in the country was conscripted into the armed services in response to the threat of an imminent German invasion. Our Generals were horrified to discover that one in every five soldiers could not read the operating instructions for some very deadly, high explosive weaponry. In order to preserve national morale, this was kept a closely guarded secret. The generals were more frightened about the damage our own soldiers would do than they were of the advancing Nazi hordes. The government's response to this dreadful situation in the immediate post war era was to send a number of teachers on a course and promote them to the rank of Educational Psychologist and thereafter to broaden this empire substantially with an annual investment of around £300,000,000 in literacy specialists, consultants, Directors of Additional Needs etc, The statistics of course, remain virtually unchanged with one in five leaving school less than functionally literate. I wonder why?
