Maggie I have had concerns about this since I became SENCo three years ago and have been tracking data since. I have found that some students with mid to low level 4 at KS 2 are returning reading ages below 10 yrs ,our cut off point on assessment for inclusion on SEN REgister , some are returning below 9 and I even have some below 8 This year I had a student who achieved a level 5 at KS 2 and returned a reading age of below 9 All my year 7 do the Kirklees (free ) reading assessment and Blackwell spelling regardless of SATs scores ,in fact every student does it on entry to the school . If they return 10 years in either or both the are added to register ,interventions put in place retested in 6 months . Further assessments are done as needed In the past two years I have seen an increasing number of students who are coming to us with reading ages below 9 years of age and those who are below 8 /7 and even 6 are also increasing but are achieving 3 or 4 at SATs . We do not use CATs score we use MIDYIS instead with band A being teh highest - many of these studnets also have reading age below 10 years . I am puzzled how students can achieve 4 with some of the reading ages they have never mind the student who got the 5 . I am struggling to find a correlation between the two but Head wants me to keep tracking it . It is my experience that at the start of KS3 there is frequently a significant difference, particularly in the 'mid to low' L4 group. > > Do those of you who test Y7 on entry find significant variation, or do you think that the two correlate quite well? > > (As a 'L4' is supposed to signify achievement expected of an 11y old, I would expect the Reading & Comprehension Ages of L4s to be around the 10y 06m - 11y mark) > > Would very much appreciate your help/comments. > > Maggie > > > __________________________________________________________ > Sent from Yahoo!
