Hi Luisa We put our 'vulnerable pupils' in with the readers / scribes / laptop users etc. Our 'not-vulnerable extra time' people go in the gym with the others. My experience of working with two pupils with insulin dependent diabetis in the past is that we had to watch them like hawks in exams becasue stress played havoc with their insulin levels. If they were in trouble, they had to have supervised 'rest breaks' to check insulin levels, have a walk, take glucose or whatever before they completd the exam. We had an extra invigilator assigned to the pupil to make sure that they could go out if they needed to. They only went out once each but I'm sure they were more confident becasue they knew they could. We could have put them in the main exam room if we had wanted to but only if the extra invigilator was there. And I'd say that they need to know the person who will take them out - if they were having a hypol they couldn't explain what to do to anyone, least of all someone they didn't know. I hope this helps. Amanda Secondary SENCO Cornwall Luisa Pinnell <luisapinnell at hotmail.com> wrote: Hope you are feeling better Janice,I will ask the caretaker what they use in our gym on Monday. Talking about heat and poorly ventilated gyms, I have a pupil who has a statement of SEN and she is also diabetic. She does not qualify for reader/ scribe, only extra time. As we are a small school and space is at a premium , the examination officer suggested that she does her GCSEs in the gym with the others. I am not happy with this (neither is the parent). Am I being fussy? And is it necessary to fill in extra forms and stuff for someone who has diabetes? The very high windows have no blinds and let in very little air - it has been known for students to pass out in the heat and once one of the invigilators collapsed. We now have a supply of cold water outside just in case students doing longer papers begin to flag. > > Take care > > > Gaynor> > > > From: jwwray14 at hotmail.com> > To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk> > Date: Fri, 9 May 2008 20:51:24 +0000> > Subject: [senco-forum] Do you use the gym for exams ?> > > > I was wondering - I fell flat on my face yesterday - in front of 130 SATS students and 4 teachers - in the gym because I tripped over the plastic sheeting they put on to protect the gym surface.> > Battered and bruised at home today - horrid.
